Young people in the media are
generally represented as being Immature, stupid, greedy, lazy, selfish, unfit,
obese, violent, callous, gullible, unreliable, careless, self-entitled and as though
never going to achieve anything. However my magazines model is a young female
who has aspired to be something great and has achieved it, this now goes
against all stereotypes of a young person in the media. Old people are shown in
the media as being grumpy, out-dated, slow, weak, whining,
unable to use technology, unhealthy, miserly, hard-of-hearing, ugly, never go
anywhere. My magazine doesn’t really mention any old people as my target
audience is young people so I’ve stuck to just using the younger generations of
16-39. My pose that I’ve had my model stand in is as though she’s got an attitude
and doesn’t really care about anyone else’s opinion on her, in many ways this
conforms to the stereotypes of young females but then it also transgresses as
most young girls are really bothered about their opinions they get of
themselves.
The social groups that are represented
in my media product are people in the “typical 16-39 year old” category range because that’s what
my magazine is aimed at so it’s about that. I believe there will be more of a
connection with my audience and the magazine if both are of a similar age
range. If i start talking about someone in their 60’s it won’t appeal to a
young male aged 18. Both male and females will like my magazine as it isn’t
aimed at a specific gender. My R&B magazine portrays a mixture of multi
cultural readers. The 16-39 year old category are usually “heavy spenders” e.g.
buy the latest gadgets such as iPods, concert tickets and designer clothes.
They use social networking sites such as twitter, Facebook and my space, they
are more interactive and use their spare time surfing the web, are normally
involved in R&B music. The type of people who would by my magazine would
usually be- C1/B- These are people that are low/middle class who don’t
have problems with spending money on luxuries. (The type of people that may
work for the week in order to spend money made for the weekends) These may be
office workers that love to read magazines or could be managers who love to
purchase some luxuries. My magazine has been priced at £1.25 anyway which isn’t
that much for anyone. Mainstreamers are 40% of the population. I wouldn’t class
my magazine as mainstream, I believe it’s different to others in the sense that
it’s got many bright colours and is unusual.
