BonQuisha (born Lashana Ava Murrain, September 4, 1981) is an American pop/R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, actress and model. BonQuisha was named Billboard's Top Female Artist of the 2000s in February 2009 as well as their Artist of the Millennium in May 2011. She was the RIAA's top certified and best-selling overall artist of the decade and the NRJ Music Awards also awarded her as their Artist of the Decade in France.
Who's your inspiration?
I have cited various artists who have influenced my musical style. I grew up listening to songs of Anita Baker and Luther Vandross, the latter of whom I eventually collaborated with Janelle. I also was exposed to the jazz music of Rachelle Ferrell, after singing Ferrell's songs during my voice lessons. I cite influences from American artists Tina Turner, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Selena, Mary J Blige, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Mariah Carey and the Colombian singer Shakira.
‘I am feeling wonderful, all this happened just by coincidence. Everything fell into place after staring at Glastonbury last summer. As a result of this I am now a star known to many! I am so proud of myself for who I have become. It’s everyone’sdream. I am still kind of shocked; I have seen it happen to people like Janelle but me? I never would have thought all this could happen. It’s a little strange when you think about it as there 7 billion people in this world and I have become this star, this icon, this role model who young girls look up to. It’s notabout your production or how many hits you have its about good music and everything coming from the inside. All this appreciation makes me want to be better as a musician. Previous to all this I was so scared, now I feel like I can take on anything, I’m a monster, I’m a diva! All of this has been one of the biggestwake up calls ever. Things like this are a real eye opener and make you really appreciate the life that you have. I have a new upcoming album coming out March 2014 of which y’all need to look out for. It features artists such as Beyoncé, Do or Die and Frank Ocean. Practice makes perfect that my motto, I’ve never had a formal singing lesson. I have been self taught from the day I was tolerated. The way I taught myself to sing was by singing other artists songs. My all time favourite being ‘It’s not right but its okay’ by Whitney Houston. Whitney’s vocal ranges are absolutely ridiculous but if you can stretch yourself to sound even half as good, you’re already amazing. Listen up though, I’ll be releasing a secret soon, keep this between you and me.’
Besides from BonQuisha’s music she is going to bring out a new clothes collection in ‘River Island’. The clothes line is referred to as that she likes to call it ‘Steal my Style’. ‘Steal my Style’ launches on the 20th June 2015, sharing her personal style with you for the summer. Her collection is stuffed with animal prints and black staples, and with each of the girls having such different body shapes, there really is something for everyone. It’s more expensive than the usual Dotty P stuff, though. We all knew there would be a clothes line released one day fromBonQuisha.
